Types of Burn Permits and their requirements:
- Residential Burning
- Issued only for single-family or two-family dwellings
- Generally available only if the lot of record is one acre or larger.
- Issued for lots smaller than one acre ONLY if Green Waste Pickup service is not offered at the site.
- Burn pile(s) must be at least 100 feet from nearest neighbors
- Burn pile(s) must be at least 30 feet from nearest structures
- Ground must be scraped clean for at least 10 feet around burn pile
- Residential burning hours are 9AM-3PM on permissive burn days only
- Agricultural Burning
- Issued for routine agricultural burning (orchard/vineyard prunings, etc.)
- Burning Hours
- Leaves, grass, and field crops: 11AM to 3PM
- Other materials: 9AM to 3 PM
- Lot or Land Development Clearing Burns
- Issued for land development and clearing only
- Typically a pre-burn inspection is performed by the local FPD
- These are NOT for year-to-year vegetation management
- Smoke Management Plans
& Burn Permit
- May be required for ANY burn
- Always required if:
- smoke impact potential is high
- there is a history of burn complaints
- there is a high danger that the fire might escape
- the fire will burn for more than one day
- the property includes more than 1.0 acres of standing brush, understory, removed whole vines, or trees
- Commercial Burning
- ALL burning on commercial property is prohibited
- Commercial property includes:
- Apartment buildings
- Motels
- Trailer parks
- Golf courses
